For the past few years, we have been bombarded by images of superheroes on all fronts, be it in theatres, streaming services, or what have you. At this time, it’s safe to say that the world is just fatigued from all of this, with the exception being the Spider-Verse movie and the Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man title.
However, there is a good reason to be excited about the latest superhero that will finally get his very own standalone game, and that is the new Black Panther that was announced a few hours ago. The most interesting fact about it is that a brand new studio is helming its development. Should you prepare the hype train and your wallets now, or not? Who or what is this new studio? Well, here’s what you need to know about this new title.
Marvel’s iconic superhero is finally getting his very own game. It will be a dedicated, action-adventure video game published by Electronic Arts, and they made a whole new studio to develop it, called Cliffhanger Games. Those who are even remotely familiar with the gaming world know that Electronic Arts is an immediate red flag due to their history, though we have reason to believe it might not be all that bad.
The new, Seattle-based development studio is led by Kevin Stephens, formerly the studio head of Monolith Production, who has directly worked on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Furthermore, his staff are experienced developers as well, people who have worked on Halo, God of War, and the Call of Duty series.
“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich SuperHero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do,” Stephens explained.
There are a few key points that should be taken into consideration. The first and most important one is that this is entirely different from the project announced last September, which would be set in World War II and involve the Black Panther teaming up with Captain America. Secondly, Black Panther will be the second of three games Electronic Arts has in the works as per their agreement with Marvel; the first is an Iron Man game, while the other is still unannounced.
Lastly, due to its recent announcement, no further information from or about the new studio has come to light. The same can be said for the game, as no expected release date or platforms for the game have been announced. We simply hope that the game honours the iconic King of Wakanda well and gives him the spotlight he sorely deserves.
