New to trail running? We’ve got some tips for you.
Even on TikTok, trail running is increasingly overtaking other types of jogging in popularity. And you’ll completely understand why after you discover more about its numerous advantages. The only difference between trail running and conventional jogging is that it takes place in or near natural areas like forest reserves or other landscapes. Dirt trails, rough terrain, uneven ground, bridges, and streams are all features of trail running. Cutting through forests, mountains, or open spaces enables the runner to become totally engrossed in nature. Running through your neighborhood woods, a park, or up a mountain, and passing through rivers and rocks, undoubtedly enhances the experience.
Trail running can be fun and also help improve your running game, too. If you’re new to trail running, or simply want to up your game, here are some tips we recommend getting straight.
Choose A Flat Trail
Even if your goal is to run up a mountain or to a far vantage point, start with a flat, simple track, such as in a nearby park or nature reserve. You can use Google to search for trails and find out how challenging they are before you go. In the Klang Valley, you can consider places like Ketumbar Hills, KLCC Park, Bukit Kiara, Gasing Hills and more. For beginners, we suggest going for something easy, because you wouldn’t want to burn out on the first round.
Know How Far To Go
It’s easy to keep running without noticing how far you’ve gone, so keep in mind that you still have a long way to go. You wouldn’t want to continue running till you have no energy left to re-trace the trail to the starting point. Therefore, it’s crucial to pick a turnaround point that makes sense for your level of fitness. Choose a track that is a little bit shorter in the woods if you can run 5k on flat ground because of the increased effort.
Snacks & Water

Water is essential at all times, but it’s crucial whether you’re jogging in the heat or at a higher altitude. There are numerous bottle varieties designed exclusively for runners. For a grip-free experience, we advise choosing a hand-held running water bottle with straps. If you’re just starting out, you can always take a small backpack or pouch with a water bottle and some nibbles. Go for snacks like energy bars and nuts.
Forget Your Headphones
While listening to music or a podcast as you run is always enjoyable, it’s wise to keep an eye out for oncoming traffic. Many trail runners run without wearing headphones. This is so that those in rural locations can hear what’s around them, which is crucial.
Beware Of Wildlife
It’s a good idea to do some research on the kinds of animals you might encounter if you intend to run through the woods, including any bugs or ticks, snakes or leeches. Keep your guard up and make sure you have the necessary supplies or protection.
Bring The Right Gear
Your personal preferences and the location of your run will determine what you pack, but you should think about items like bug spray, tick spray, sunscreen, a torchlight and appropriate clothing. Additionally, you should dress in something airy and light to prevent feeling discomfort.
Wear The Right Shoes
The right shoes will also come in handy. While there are plenty of trails that can be tackled with basic running shoes, there are extra-durable trail running shoes that have added features like waterproofing, rock plate for protection, and extra-grippy soles. They’re often more cushioned, too, for added stability.
