No one said that dating is cheap, but do guys usually bear all the costs? A viral tweet discussing the cost of a date sparked another debate on paying during dates in today’s age.
The tweet by user @/meinmokhtar estimated the cost of an average date between guys and girls. In the tweet, he said that the guy would have to drive, fill up for gas, and pay for the rest of the date and included the estimated amount for the entire date, which totalled RM250.
His tweet caught the attention of many netizens, who chimed in about the cost of a date and who should pay, especially on the first date. There were tons of tweets from men who sided with the user, saying that the tweet is relatable and that they’ve had the same experience.
However, many users also felt that the original tweet insinuated that girls don’t pay for dates, to which they responded that not all girls would be against splitting the cost. One tweet says, “There are many girls who would genuinely pay when you two go on dates,” while another user shared that she once paid for all the meals during a first date with a guy.
Some even questioned the original tweeter, asking why he’s still chasing after “high-maintenance” girls when he’s complaining about the cost of dating them. And of course, when it comes to these “male-vs-female” debates, there will also be those who share their neutral opinions and advice, like one user who brought up the idea that both parties should be equally responsible in their relationship.
But what do you think about the tweet? Is this really the current dating climate in Malaysia? Or do you and your date take turns paying?
