The saying that “customers are always right” isn’t exactly 100% true because we’ve seen cases of rude customers taking their anger out on staff members. Recently, a rude customer was caught yelling at a hotpot restaurant staff over a minor error. To make matters worse, he even got physical.

The aforementioned confrontation that happened between a male customer and the restaurant staff members took place at CHAO HotPot Bar in Starling Mall. According to a friend of the staff, said customer apparently went ballistic after he was served the wrong soup base, which included an ingredient he didn’t like.

Because of this, the customer demanded a free meal despite already finishing his food. The female staff said it wasn’t possible, so instead, she offered to take the item off the bill. Unsatisfied, the customer threw the bill folder onto the staff’s face. The customer eventually paid for his meal, but opted to throw RM500 cash into the soup pot, leaving the staff stunned by his action.

The incident was confirmed by the restaurant, along with CCTV footage of the incident posted on its official Facebook page. The restaurant also revealed in another post that the customer went on Facebook Live to apologise and defended his action but wasn’t truthful about what happened and even tried to slander the restaurant and the female staff.

The same post also revealed that the customer returned to the restaurant with a gift basket to apologise in person. Responding to this, the restaurant said it will not accept the customer’s apology because they don’t condone such violence towards their staff members. The restaurant also added that it won’t compromise with the customer, especially after he tried to spread rumours about the incident.

The restaurant also mentioned that the female staff was clearly affected by the incident and had to go on break due to the trauma. In addition to declining the apology, the restaurant said they had reported this incident to the police and will contact their lawyers to take legal action against the customer. As of reporting, there have been no updates on the story nor any statement from the police.

We’re glad that the restaurant is standing up against unruly customers and we hope that the customer gets the punishment he deserves. Watch the full video of the incident below:
