When we think about skiing, we think snowy mountains and cold crisp air. But, as it turns out, you don’t need to go anywhere to ski, you can ski in Malaysia too! It certainly isn’t the traditional form of skiing, but as the saying goes, “where there’s a will, there’s a way”.
A local netizen recently spotted an odd scene while driving around in Hartamas. Instead of seeing someone on a bike, or rollerblades or a skateboard, they were riding skis in the middle of the road! Needless to say, it left many bewildered.

“(It’s crazy), Hartamas people (are) skiing on the road,” the netizen said on Twitter, uploading footage of the odd sight. Apparently, they had been driving around somewhere in Hartamas when they spotted a figure dressed in sportswear with a pair of ski poles and roller skis!
“He’s skiing!” the person in the video cackled. “I’ve never seen anyone ski on the road (before).” However, the ‘skis’ he wore had wheels attached to them, likely to make up for the lack of snowy slopes. While some netizens also found the sight strange, others claimed such a sport existed.

As it turns out, those were apparently roller skis, which are similar to snow skis but meant for preparing athletes for cross country skiing. “(I’ve) seen a game like this, and there are events like this,” one comment read. “It’s just not known here.” Another said: “It’s not skis. Many people do this near Dataran Putrajaya. (It’s fun apparently.) People who don’t know how to balance their bodies use roller skates. Using this is (great) and fast.”
Still, other netizens apparently felt the same. “Ever since the hot weather (arrived), there’s been plenty of weird things happening. (They) probably miss the snow,” a netizen said. “What do you know, bro,” someone else stated. “He’s in the middle of preparing to ski at the Alps. Probably going to Switzerland at the end of the year.”

Well, we’ll be honest, this probably isn’t a sport many people have heard of or seen. But, it certainly looks fun! Who knows, perhaps more people will take it up and it’ll make a name for itself in Malaysia.
