If you’re from Penang, you may be familiar with chef and local food blogger Tan Hock Chai (陈福财). Known for his jolly attitude and great love for food, Hock Chai touched many lives through his kindness and unwavering dedication to Penang food.
Unfortunately, just yesterday (7th May), it was revealed that Tan Hock Chai had passed away in his sleep. The food blogger was 43 years old when he passed. Since then, family, friends and fans have been mourning his passing.
His brother, Peter Tan was the first to share the heartbreaking announcement. He uploaded the post to his Facebook around 11am on Sunday, saying: “My brother Hock Chai passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning. This is for all his friends, family and fans of Hock Chai Flavours Talk.”
The news came as a shock as Hock Chai’s last post on Facebook was on 6th May. At that time, Hock Chai had taken the opportunity to share a few words of wisdom. Hock Chai had also shared a place to enjoy some Chinese Nasi Lemak in Penang, much to the delight of his followers then.
Friends and fans have since flooded his socials with messages, both expressing their grief and bidding goodbye to the food blogger. Several also thanked Hock Chai for his friendship and friendly disposition. A few also shared their favourite moments with the chef and food blogger.
Tan Hock Chai had previously ran the Zi Zai Restaurant (自在饭店) before it closed during the pandemic. After that venture, he turned to food blogging which soon took off as many enjoyed his thorough yet loving sharing of Penang food.
His brother, Peter later shared that his funeral will be held tomorrow (9th May) at 11am. He has also thanked netizens for their comforting messages and for simply remembering his brother. We too offer our condolences and hope the family will soon find peace with his passing.
