You know, one of the things that makes manga so fascinating is its distinctive originality, which transcends the realm of the ordinary. There is the Junji Ito collection, which is beloved and admired for its eye-catching imagery and intriguing plots. That being said, gore and violence is nothing new when it comes to manga.
However, there are some manga that push the boundaries and venture into unthinkable realms of horror or hentai. But since manga is generally less ‘popular’ globally, the authors really allow themselves to go all out and take brutality to inhumane levels. So now you might be thinking, “huh? like what?” And to answer your question, here are 6 of the most screwed up manga that you can read – but we strongly discourage you from doing so:
1. Emergence (Metamorphosis)
Emergence Metamorphosis is a hentai manga renowned in the anime community for being so disturbing, dark and just down right MESSED UP. There’s drug abuse, rape scenes, some violence and PLENTY of emotionally bothersome scenes. There’s prostitution of the main character – who is in middle school by the way…
However, the true horror behind the plot lines is that they may – heck, very likely – happen to real people in real life. To sum this up without spoiling anything, it’s a story about a lonely, introverted girl who gets a makeover to try to get people to pay more attention to her and let’s just say it works – in the worst way possible.
The manga depicts the brutal reality of sex, rape, abuse, all those things. But it’s an especially true tale for those in the smut, porn or prostitution industry – or just people using sex as a coping mechanism in general. It shows practically every type of tragedy that can befall young children.
T.W: abuse, drug abuse, grooming, prostitution, rape, violence
2. Kimi ga Bokura wo Akuma to Yonda Koro
Ah yes, another manga where the protagonist is a kid, but a high school kid this time. The manga starts off with a seemingly continuous stream of basically everything you don’t want to see – rape, extortion, torture and then the story going forwards just revolves around those themes and all the people affected by them, because of the main character.
The problem is it’s not done in a wholesome “we’ve been through this before and can work it out together” way. The main character loses all his memory and can’t remember anything from his life except for the last six months, and we essentially relive all the TERRIBLE things he has done while he progressively regains memory and deals with the consequences of his actions.
You know we always love a good thriller, but this…
T.W: abuse, extortion, gore, rape, torture, violence
3. Bradherley no Basha
Bardherley no Basha consists of eight chapters of dreadful filth without any solace. So each year, one of Europe’s most prominent nobles, Lord Nicola A. Bradherley, sends his coach to several orphanages to adopt LITTLE GIRLS to join his “opera troupe.” Yes, it is now specifically about CHILDREN. The reason we used the term “opera troupe” is that the majority of these LITTLE GIRLS never perform on stage.
The entire manga is focused on young orphan girls who are abused and gang-raped. The strength of this manga, however, comes in the intense, honest emotion it makes you feel. We learn more about the orphans as a result of our introduction to them, including their thoughts, dreams, and aspirations. All of this makes it much more tragic because you already know what a dreadful end awaits them.
The violence and sexual abuse aside, this is just not an easy manga to read, purely because of the emotional strain it puts you under. Definitely not for the faint hearted.
T.W: abuse, gore, pedophilia, rape, torture, violence
4. Mai-chan no Nichijou
The protagonist of this manga – SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD Mai-chain – can recover from any kind of injury swiftly. She is hired as a maid and sold to various customers who are free to treat her however cruelly or painfully they choose in order to fulfil their desires. It is regarded as one of the most infamous erotic-grotesque manga series ever. Honestly, this comic is f***ed up! Listen, this manga is actually F****D UP!
She’s an immortal slave who is confined to a whorehouse for wealthy loons to be sexually humiliated and dismembered daily. Yes, you read that right, DISMEMBERED. We’re not talking about some torture like in 50 Shades of Grey; this is true physical abuse that includes the use of fire, weapons, and even ANIMALS – all while sexually abusing her.
People come by and do HORRID things to her. She never catches a break since there is always another pervert waiting in the wings with twisted desires for her.
T.W: abuse, gore, pedophilia, rape, torture, violence
5. 17-sai.
True crime story fans should be familiar with the storyline of this manga because as sad as it is, yes, this manga is based on a true story. It concerns the horrific atrocities done by 17-year-old boys against a 17-year-old girl. This story really shows how far humans can go go in terms of being just pure evil.
You see all the terrible atrocities they commit, as well as how the girl’s family works with the police to find out where she’s been taken and all that combined just becomes emotionally devastating. The helplessness of the situation feels very, very real. The funny thing is, this manga is a very watered down representation of what actually happened in real life.
T.W: abuse, gore, rape, torture, violence
6. Juujika no Rokunin
When you read the first chapter, your first impression would be that it’s a compelling revenge story based around complex characters in a morally grey world. Well, that first impression is VERY wrong. This manga isn’t even horror; it’s just torture porn. Yes, there is a lot of violence, gore and extreme imagery, but that’s the least of this manga’s problems.
The problem is that every plot development is so very artificially constructed to put a character in danger of being either tortured or raped, no in between. The main character of the novel goes through rigorous training to live a life of vengeance after being ridiculed and abused during sixth grade.
He sets out on a torturous voyage of revenge to find the classmates who made his school experience unbearable. In other words, a group of psychotic kids who all require treatment. Nobody in the manga is actually normal, and nothing about it can be considered normal.
