How do we define success? For actors, that might mean having a career that spans the years with memorable works. But, not everyone shares that definition. Former Hong Kong actress Maria Tung Ling (童铃) certainly doesn’t!
Maria Tung made her debut mid-1980s and was well-known for her mixed ancestry. However, that wasn’t all she was known for. After filming several adult films, Maria soon became stereotyped as a porn star! She eventually faded out of the entertainment scene but has been living a happy life since.
Maria began her acting career in 1984, with hopeful dreams of being an actress. She started off strong with the 1986 film “Lucky Stars Go Places (最佳福星)” which had a star-studded cast of Andy Lau (刘德华), Alan Tam (谭咏麟) and Sammo Hung (洪金宝). Although her performance earned her some recognition, competition then was tough. She was later criticised for having dull acting skills which put her at a further disadvantage.
In an effort to get her name out, Maria decided to star in adult films such as “情不自禁 (Can’t Help)” and “太太的情人 (My Wife’s Lover)”. Maria later became known for her work in “My Wife’s Lover” in which she played a lesbian character. But, she was reportedly upset with the film company over the nude scenes and claimed they had deceived her. This also supposedly caused her to break up with her boyfriend of two years.

Maria decided to take a break from acting but ended up quitting the show business in 1993. She later got married and disappeared from the public eye. Recently, it was revealed that she’s living a happy life with her family in the UK. The now 58-year-old has two beautiful daughters and a loving husband.
Although Maria has not expressed any interest in returning to the entertainment scene, she did share the album cover of “无声胜有声” which she reportedly modelled for. Clearly, her days as an actress and model weren’t all bad! Well, we sincerely wish her well as she continues the rest of her life in peace.
