Picture this; you’re out with your friends and you’ve never looked better – you’re feeling yourself and you NEED a picture to post on your feed. What do you reach for? Your phone. From candid snapshots to sleek ad campaigns and everywhere in between, mobile phone photography has advanced rapidly in these few short years.
Nowadays, most people would rather invest in a phone with a high quality camera, as compared to an actual DSLR camera. With the way mobile phone technology has evolved in ways we never thought was possible, it has essentially made it so that everybody can be a photographer.
However, finding a phone that can provide the same level of quality as an actual camera can be difficult. There’s an abundant amount of phone brands for you to choose from. And as someone that does ALL my photography using my phone, I’ve realised that my pictures just don’t turn out well when it comes to shooting my nightlife – that was until I started using the vivo X90 Pro.
Pro Photography In Your Pocket
In case you didn’t already know, Vivo has joined forces with ZEISS to debut a smartphone series with the ZEISS 1-inch main camera, being the first in Malaysia to ever do so. But you might be thinking “what’s a ZEISS 1-inch camera and how’s that supposed to help me?” Well, let’s jump into it.
With a ZEISS 1-inch Main Camera, the X90 Pro can fully capture the beauty of night within seconds — no tripod or lighting equipment needed! Whether you’re trying to capture the KLCC view from your window or the sky lit with stars, with the vivo X90 Pro, all you have to do is use your hand and tap to capture.
This is all made possible because the X90 Pro utilises the industry’s largest 1-inch IMX989 sensor which is the same size as the sensor on Sony’s “black card” compact camera. The X90 Pro’s f/1.75 large aperture and 3.2 MP large pixel size increases the light intake per pixel, allowing for brighter and purer night images.
Don’t Believe It?
Well, you aren’t the first to doubt it. We too were once sceptical and thought that this was all just too good to be true. Well, we’re gonna save you the doubt because we got to try the phone out for ourselves and let’s just say that it really is too good, but it’s definitely true!
We put the phone to the ultimate night photography test – from taking portraits, to city skyline views, to even starry skies – we did it all, and it was love at first snap.
1. Portrait
The X90 Pro uses the industry’s largest IMX989 sensor with a large f/1.75 aperture, which improves night portrait quality and enhances bokeh effect. The camera is 50 MP, so the portraits look better and more delicate. This lays the foundation for great and refined portraits. vivo’s “portrait understanding technology” will detect image data segment by segment, like a professional retoucher, analyse the semantic focus and contour details of the face, and establish key face coordinates containing points for up to 103 features.
The focal length is 50 mm which is the best portrait focal length even in the professional world. It delivers a perspective that is closer to that of human eyes. As a result, it highlights the subjects, but also makes the background clear, forming a good portrait mood.
2. City Skyline View
Generally when we try to take pictures at night, the image produced is always different from what we see with our own eyes – however that is not the case when it comes to the vivo X90 Pro. They’ve used Al network learning to learn what great night scene tones in professional-grade photos should be like to create Night Mode.
Through pixel-level semantic segmentation, Al Night Mode can identify elements such as the sky and human faces in night scenes with complex lighting; it then carries out segmentation to finetune the tone and colour of each segment. With the capacity to process HDR tones with a colour depth of up to 22-bit, Al Night Mode can make tone and colour super refined, producing more subtle colour transitions. As a result, users can shoot masterpiece-level night images with one tap.
Al Night Mode enhances image tone and colour in all night scenarios, especially in scenes with a blue-tone sky and contrast between cool and warm shades. This feature is enabled by default; can be turned on or off by going to UI->More-›Night Sky Enhancement
3. Night Skies
Usually, capturing the moon, stars or just anything bright in the dark is a shot that requires the usage of very advanced professional equipment and photography skills. Well, thanks to their new AI PD Extreme Night Focus Technology, it has solved the problem of not being able to focus sufficiently in extreme low-light conditions, allowing for fast focusing in such conditions with an accuracy of up to 13%.
Alongside their fully upgraded Night Sky Imagining System, the main camera’s capabilities when shooting in low-light conditions are double that of the GNV sensor, with a maximum ISO light sensitivity of 20W, allowing it to capture the starry sky with great clarity. Additionally, the camera can adaptively adjust the tone and colour of night images on the pixel level, making both the starry sky and objects on the ground look purer, brighter and more natural.
