There was a lot to celebrate at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards. There were several first time winners (Zendaya, Austin Butler, Quinta Brunson, Jeremy Allen, Tyler James Williams, Ke Huy Quan) but history was made when Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett won in their respective categories.
In case you aren’t aware, Michelle Yeoh won Best Comedy/Musical Actress for her role as Chinese immigrant Evelyn Wang in the psychedelic comedy drama “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. Meanwhile, Angela Bassett took home the Golden Globe for her performance as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
"I'm just gonna stand here and take this all in. 40 years. Not letting go of this."

“Whew! OK. I’m just gonna stand here and take this all in,” the 60-year-old actress said. “Forty years, not letting go of this. So just quickly, thank you Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor. It’s been an amazing journey and incredible fight to be here today, but I think it’s worth it.” “As time went by — I turned 60 last year — and I think all of you women understand this as the days, years, numbers get bigger, the opportunities get smaller, as well,” Michelle continued. “Then along came the best gift: ‘Everything, Everywhere All at Once’.”
This is Michelle’s first Golden Globes nomination and win. She’s only the second Asian performer to win in this category, after Awkwafina won for “The Farewell” back in 2019. It’s also a proud moment to see our own homegrown talent be the first Malaysian and Southeast Asian star to win the gong for Best Comedy/Musical Actress! Many are now rooting for her to be the first Asian winner to win Best Actress at the Oscars.
Also, shout out to Michelle for telling the Golden Globes to “shut up” when they interrupted her speech with the “wrap up music”.

Someone who also deserves her flowers is Angela Bassett. The 64-year-old actress snagged the trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. She also made history by becoming the first actor in the MCU to be nominated and win for an acting role in a Marvel film. This marks her second win (and second nomination) at the Golden Globes. She previously won best actress in a musical or comedy for 1993’s Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It”.
“I got to find my words. I’m so nervous. My heart is just beating,” she said. “The late Tony Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny. But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage to have faith. It requires patience, as we just heard. And it requires a true sense of yourself. It’s not easy because the past is circuitous and it has many unexpected detours, but, by the grace of God, I stand here. I stand here grateful.”
