Malaysian’s women doubles pair, Pearly Tan (陈康乐) and Thinaah Muralitharan have been climbing the ranks steadily for a while. It hasn’t been easy as they’ve had setbacks, like Pearly’s injury during the Japan Open. But, their hard work and efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either; in fact gold medallists recently acknowledged the duo.
Well, yesterday (30th October), the girls’ hard work all paid off. After a very close battle against Japanese shuttlers Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, the two managed to win the French Open 2022 title. Not only is this their second World Tour title after the Swiss Open 2021, this is also the first time Malaysia’s women doubles team has won the French Open!
The world No 11 pair defeated Japan’s former French Open 2018 champions, Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara with a score of 21-19, 18-21 21-15. The atmosphere in Paris is an emotional rollercoaster as the Malaysian pair came close to defeat a number of times. However, they prevailed and went on to take the match!
The duo made history in Malaysia as they became the first Women’s Doubles pair to win the World Tour. Previously, they won the Commonwealth Games gold medal and had only reached the semi-finals at several other matches. We’re proud to have seen them come a long way!
Even after the recent viral video of Indonesian coach addressing them as “white” and “black”, their spirit remained strong. They took what they got and manifested it into something more. Perhaps, it was god’s way of showing that they truly deserve the best! Congratulations PearlThin!
