The finale of “Miss Universe Malaysia 2022″ was held last week on Friday (7th October). In case you missed it, the event saw 25-year-old Cheam Wei Yeng (or better known as Lesley Cheam) being crowned the winner of the beauty pageant.
Not all were delighted with the news though. Soon after the news broke out, netizens took to social media to express their disappointment towards the overall results. Many argued that the first runner-up of the pageant, Ajunee Kaur, was more deserving of being the titleholder.
Speaking in an interview with Remaja, Ajunee’s mom, Veena Kaur, revealed that she was very proud after seeing her daughter give her very best on the night of the event. Veena also shared about how she wasn’t initially keen on her daughter’s decision to join this year’s “Miss Universe Malaysia” competition. She said, “The decision to take part in the pageant was of her own accord. At first, I was concerned that she would neglect her studies as she was very busy with the pageant.”
“But her sister told me to put my trust on Ajunee to balance both her commitment in “Miss Universe Malaysia” and also her studies. Ajunee has been taking a break from her studies for over a year. She was supposed to return to the United Kingdom last month. However, she decided to postpone her initial plans so that she can focus solely on the competition. I think she has put a lot of effort into the competition. Of course, we’re very proud of her,” Veena added.
Despite her loss, it appears that many netizens left supportive remarks towards Ajunee. Some even suggested she take part in another beauty pageant. In response to the netizens’ comments, Veena seemingly implied that her daughter currently has set a different goal in her life following her participation in “Miss Universe Malaysia 2022”.
According to Veena, “I’m really proud of her, maybe God has something else planned for her. But as far as I understand, she only wanted to take part in this beauty contest. After this, she just wants to focus on her studies.” Veena was then asked about whether her daughter has any plans to represent the country in another beauty queen contest.
She responded, “I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure she won’t be taking part in another pageantry. I know my daughter – This may be her first and also the last time she participates in a beauty pageant. It’s difficult for me to describe. Indeed, she has become an ultimate favourite among local and even international fans. I think a lot of people are also disappointed (after the results were announced). I can see that Ajunee has learned a lot, she has sacrificed her free time and also her time with her friends. Still, we are proud of her.”
In related news about “Miss Universe Malaysia 2022” finale, a petition was recently launched by the Malaysian Pageant Lovers association, which calls for Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) to crown the 20-year-old student as the winner of the competition. The statement on the petition reads, “She is robbed. She (is) placed as the first runner-up and pageant lovers (referred to as PLs) are in shock with the result! We want the organisation to hear Malaysian PLs’ voice as we think Ajunee is the rightful winner.”
At the time of writing (Tuesday, 11th October), the petition has gained a total of 1,037 signatures from the public. Check it out here.
