Covid cases have been on the rise in recent months. This leaves many of us wondering if Chinese New Year will happen. Many fear being unable to return to their hometowns for the family reunion next month.
Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee (黄明志), or Namewee, shares the sentiment. He recently released a new single titled “Return With A Smile”, dedicating it to all who are far from home.
The song expresses longing for one’s hometown and captures the tired yet relieved emotions one has when arriving at a place they call home. The lyrics themselves detail the journey home, one that many can relate with.
Namewee has remained true to himself even in a melancholic song such as this. He talks about the exhaustion one feels from living day to day and how returning home is reinvigorating.
The song ends on a hopeful note, with a declaration that no matter what life throws at you, “Home is my journey’s end and where I belong“. It may not be the typical Chinese New Year song we expected, but it’s one that we can resonate with.
