WhatsApp has made the decision to limit message forwarding to just 1 chat at a time in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 misinformation.
The Facebook-owned messaging platform said that there has been a “significant increase” of forwarding ever since the coronavirus crisis.
In a statement, Whatsapp said:
“We’ve seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation. We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.”
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has been prompting social media companies to help combat the issue. A spokesperson said that this new implementation is in effect and will be in place indefinitely.
The best thing to do is verify the information at hand before sharing it.
