A new spin-off to the “John Wick” franchies is in the works, and this time, a female assassin is taking the lead.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate, the original company responsible for the “John Wick” franchise, has announced a spin-off movie to the “John Wick” franchise called “Ballerina”. The new action movie will share the same universe as it originator, with Director Len Wiseman, who previous did the “Underworld” franchise of movies, set to direct the movie.
As for the plot, instead of John Wick who was the face of the franchise, the new movie will instead shift the focus on to a young ballerina assassin who seeks revenge against people who killed her family. The script for the movie will be handle by writer Shay Hatten who also did the script for “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”.
Speculations can be made about the finer details of the story. “Ballerina” was a credited character from “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”, which was the very first ballerina we saw performing when John Wick, the character, visited the Ruska Roma for help in New York City.
No confirmation has been made on whether Unity Phelan who played the ballerina, would be making a return to the series. The same can be said about Anjelica Huston’s character who was synonymous with the ballerina scenes; though the movie has been left wide open for her return.
Others that will be involved in the movie are Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski whom will serve as the producers of the movie. Meanwhile, “John Wick” star Keanu Reeves and Kaley Smalley, head of development for Wiseman’s Sketch Films, will be taking up the executive producers role.
No official release date have been announced for the movie. However, Lionsgate has already announced that the fourth entry to the “John Wick” franchise is slated to be aired in cinemas on 21st May 2021.
