Following the historic win of Pakatan Harapan in the election 2 weeks ago, Tun Mahathir Muhammad and his family have been receiving an avalanche of well-wishes and gifts from grateful Malaysians.
While the family is thankful for the thoughts, Siti Hasmah has asked for Malaysians to make donations to charities instead.

In a Facebook posted by her daughter Marina Mahathir, the first lady of Malaysia explains that politicians under the Pakatan Harapan government are not allowed to receive gifts other than flowers and food. The overwhelming amount of gifts have also taken up a lot of space at their residence.
As such, Siti Hasmah asks for the rakyat’s understanding and requests for them to redirect their good thoughts to charities.
Marina posts reads:
“Ever since the election win 2 weeks ago, she has received so many well wishes from so many of you, congratulating her and Dad. (…) However accompanying many of these congratulations are flowers, food and other gifts. She has asked me to request that there be no more gifts sent because one, the rule in the Pakatan Harapan government is that no politician is allowed to receive any gifts other than flowers or food, and 2, as modest as the gifts might be, they do take up a lot of space. (…) So she seeks your understanding to please not send anything for her, even though Raya is coming. Instead she requests that you please make donations to any charity of your choice. That would please her very much.”
Now that’s a first lady worthy of our respect 😉
