Warner Bros and DC Entertainment has chosen Asian-American filmmaker Cathy Yan to helm an untitled “Suicide Squad” spin-off focusing on the popular villain character Harley Quinn with actress Margot Robbie set to reprise the role.
According to Deadline, the movie will be based on the 1995 “Birds of Prey” comics, featuring an all female team including Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Huntress, Black Canary, and Katana.

This huge-budget project not only make Yan the first Asian female to direct a superhero film, but also the third female filmmaker to helm a DC film, joining Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) and Ava DuVernay (“The New Gods”).

The film’s script will be penned by Christina Hodson who wrote for the upcoming “Transformers” spinoff, “Bumblebee”, and was also tapped to script for “Batgirl” movie.
Yan was a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing. Her directorial debut, “Dead Pigs” earned positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the United States.
