We get it – traditional weddings are so yesterday. These days, 21st century couples are getting more adventurous when planning for their wedding. It’s no wonder wedding themes are trending. Lovebirds want their big day to be memorable and special for them as well as their friends and families.
Besides that, the bride and groom will also get the opportunity to show off their personalities and mutual love, be it movies, hobbies, travel, or any other pop culture. A wedding is usually a once in a lifetime occasion, so why not make it the ultimate unforgettable experience? If you’re looking for unique wedding themes, take some inspiration from these Malaysian couples:
1. A cutesy “Hello Kitty” wedding
For the inner child who needs everything Hello Kitty in her life! It was a dream come true for this Malaysian bride when she and her beau got married in a Hello Kitty setting last year. We have to give props to the groom, as not many guys would agree to tie the knot in what is perceived to be a girly fashion. The newlyweds look incredibly cute posing in front of a huge wallpaper that has illustrations of Hello Kitty and her leading man, Dear Daniel.
2. Bulldozer-themed wedding
Mohd Zulkhairi Wahab and Malisza Alias made headlines in December 2012 when they were photographed in the mouth of a bulldozer. It is believed that they were making a grand entrance, via the huge vehicle, to their wedding reception location in Kampung Teloi Tua, Kedah. Amazingly, the bulldozer mouth could fit 4 people, including the best man and maid of honour. Zulkhairi and his leading lady were also accompanied by 30 motorcycles behind. We have no doubt that their unusual wedding was the talk of the kampung 😉
3. Back-to-school wedding theme
Instead of opting for a fancy celebration or traditional wedding, these lovebirds decided to recall the good old days by showing up in their high school uniforms. The sweethearts have been dating since they were students and decided to give their wedding an appropriate throwback. Here’s another benefit for those of y’all thinking of having a school uniform-themed wedding: You’d get to save a huge sum from not spending on wedding outfits. Perhaps they thought it would be better to invest in their honeymoon?
4. Outdoor Carnival Circus
Dubbed as one of the most expensive Malaysian weddings in 2014, high-profile couple Benjamin Yong (founder and CEO of The BIG Group) and Elizabeth Lee (co-founder of Bowerhaus Jewellery) celebrated their union in a lavish carnival-themed ceremony. Held in Kuala Lumpur’s Chin Woo Stadium, the vibrant funfair had a spinning carousel centrepiece, a 25-piece swing band, aerial trapeze dancers, ballerinas, synchronised swimmers, carnival-themed wedding cakes, as well as various food and colourful goodies. Every adult in attendance had the perfect excuse to let their inner child out and party away.
5. “Go, Go, Power Rangers!”
It’s morphin’ time! Power Rangers parties are usually reserved for kids, but Ameerul and Nawwal were surrounded by their own team of superheroes when they got married in May 2015. The event, which took place at Simpol The Garden of Love in Rawang, saw a few of the couple’s friends clad in their respective Red Ranger costumes. One of them stood out by turning up as White Ranger. Of course, the main stars were still Ameerul (in his navy suit) and Nawwal (who wore a white flouncy bridal gown).
6. Arsenal-themed wedding
If you’re ever going to give your wedding a football theme, take a cue from Aqeel and Deena. The Malaysian lovebirds made international headlines last April when they took their Arsenal fandom to a whole new level. Decked out in red and white, not only did the bridesmaids and groomsmen wear Arsenal jerseys, the venue was also decorated in accordance to the football theme. To hype up the football fever, a mini football pitch was set up, while football matches were screened though a projector in the background.
7. “Star Wars” Jedi-themed wedding
There’s no doubt about it, the force is strong with these 2. At their October 2011 wedding, a pair of “Star Wars” fans from Shah Alam got their dream wedding when they were able to live out their favourite movie franchise on their special day. Surrounded by Stormtroopers, there was even a Darth Vader to greet guests upon entering the wedding venue. The “Star Wars” saga is a timeless and endless source of inspiration for couples wanting to let their inner geek out. What better way to show your love for that galaxy far, far, away right?
8. “Descendants Of The Sun”-inspired wedding
Jin Lim, who is better known as his YouTube moniker, Jinnyboy, got upgraded to “Jinnyman” when he tied the knot with Michelle Ng last year. Much like his onscreen persona, Jinnyboy’s pre-wedding “Descendants Of The Sun” shoot was also larger than life. Many would agree that Jinnyboy successfully channeled Song Joong Ki to a tee when he donned an identical navy green suit. Why the army themed (specifically based on the popular Korean TV show)? Michelle shared that it was Jin’s first ever Korean drama. “Here’s the #truestory: It was Jin’s first K-Drama cause he was forced to teman me watch the 1st episode. He ends up completing the full series faster than I do, in 3 days time!!” wrote Michelle. YouTube star Jun Sung Ahn even dedicated the DOTS’ theme song “Always” on the violin during the wedding dinner.

9. Underwater wedding ceremony
Earlier in January this year, a woman from Slovakia and a man from Maharashtra took their wedding vows under the sea in Kerala, India. Both in their 20s, Eunika Pogran and Nikhil Pawar (who is a diving trainer) were dressed in their wedding attire as they plunged into the deep blue sea. The couple’s stage was decorated with coconuts shells, palm leaves, and flowers. When the priest held up a placard, which read “You may now kiss the bride”, Pogran and Pawar took off their mouthpiece and sealed the ceremony with a kiss.
