A new “Snow White” animated remake, titled “Red Shoes & The 7 Dwarfs”, is under fire for fat-shaming. In one of its adverts, a short, plump Snow White can be seen looking enviously at a taller, skinnier version of herself.
“What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?” the tagline asks.
Tess Holiday, a plus-sized model known for her #effyourbeautystandards campaign on social media, took to Twitter to express her disgust. She wrote, “How did this get approved by an entire marketing team? Why is it okay to tell young kids being fat = ugly? @ChloeGMoretz.“

Directed by South Korean director Hung Sungho for Locus Corp, “Red Shoes & The 7 Dwarfs” stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Gina Gershon, and Jim Rash. The story features Moretz as “a princess who doesn’t fit into the celebrity world of princesses — or their dress size”. In order to look “beautiful”, she has to put on the magical red shoes.
In response to Holiday’s tweet, Moretz said, “I have now fully reviewed the marketing for ‘Red Shoes’. I am just as appalled and angry as everyone else, this wasn’t approved by me or my team. Please know I have let the producers of the film know. I lent my voice to a beautiful script that I hope you will all see in its entirety.”

The actual story is powerful for young women and resonated with me. I am sorry for the offense that was beyond my creative control https://t.co/HZP2ydPCAX

Besides that, Locus apologised for their marketing material and said it was pulling the campaign. They added, “Our film, a family comedy, carries a message designed to challenge social prejudices related to standards of physical beauty in society by emphasising the importance of inner beauty.”
The company also explained that Snow White is on a journey to find her lost father and will learn that “not only to accept herself, but to celebrate who she is, inside and out”.
“Red Shoes & The 7 Dwarfs” is slated for release sometime next year.
