“If you mess with me, my sister, my mother, or the innocent in this city, you’re gonna get lit up.”
The CW has finally released the first trailer for its upcoming superhero show, “Black Lightning”, and it looks epic! For those who are not in the know, Black Lightning aka Jefferson Pierce is one of DC Comic’s first black superheroes who has electrical powers.
Executive produced by Greg Berlanti (who also created “Supergirl”), “Black Lightning” follows Jefferson Pierce (played by Cress Williams), a man wrestling with a secret. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning many years ago. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he settled into being a principal and a dad.
As the father of 2 daughters, Anissa (played by Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (played by China Anne McClain), he is also the principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighbourhood overrun by a local gang called The One Hundred. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.
According to The Verge, “Black Lightning” is not part of the larger DC universe that The CW has put together. “We do not aim to do a 5-way crossover. ‘Black Lightning’, at this time, is not part of the ‘Arrowverse’. It is a separate situation,” the studio’s chief Mark Pedowitz explained.
He also shared that part of the reason is because the upcoming series films in Atlanta while the others (including “The Flash”, “Supergirl”, “Arrow”, and “Legends of Tomorrow”) are shot in Vancouver, Canada.
“Black Lightning” is set to premiere sometime this fall.
