Star-Lord’s father, whose identity was kept out of the limelight in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, could be heading towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) soon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources said that “The Hateful Eight” actor Kurt Russell is in talks to play the father of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) in the sequel to Marvel‘s “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
It’s still too early to confirm anything as the actor was not given an official offer regarding the role and has yet to read the script as well. However, both director James Gunn and Marvel as well as Russell are confident that the outcome will turn out positive.
The sequel will see Gunn returning to the director’s chair and he will helm it based on a script written by himself. Other returning cast members include Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper. The film will be joined by newcomer Pom Klementieff as well.
Peter Quill’s father was mentioned in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, but his role was not emphasised much. Thus, the sequel will focus more on the relationship between Peter and his father. If everything goes well, Russell will play the role of Peter’s father.
Russell is best known for his role as Snake Plissken in futuristic action film “Escape from New York” and its sequel, “Escape from L.A”. He also starred in horror film “The Thing” and dark kung-fu comedy action film “Big Trouble in Little China”. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in “Elvis” and a Golden Globe Award for his performance in “Silkwood”.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” is slated for release on 5th May 2017 and will begin shooting in early 2016.
UPDATE (23rd December, 2:57pm):
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal and Wolfpop’s Happy Sad Confused podcast (via CBM), Russell confirmed that he did speak with Gunn about the role of Peter Quill’s father.
However, he explained that he has yet to fully committ himself to the part due to one reason – He hasn’t seen the first one and had no idea what the fuss is about. “(The Guardians rumour) is one of those things that’s really funny. The way the world works today is very different from back in the day when nobody knew about anything. I literally got a phone call 2 days ago about this,” he said.
He further explained:
I’ve never seen “Guardians of the Galaxy”. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it. Many times I’ve heard “That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie (with) great characters.” I don’t know it. So, I didn’t realise that the man (James Gunn) had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, “Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.”
“So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do,” he added.
