To be honest, our hearts can’t handle any more celebrity break-ups.
After reports surfaced that Ariana Grande and Big Sean have split, multiple sites have reported that another Hollywood power couple, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, have called off their engagement after a year and a half together. The representatives from both agencies exclusive confirmedly their split to Us Weekly.
Fans are in shock and disbelief as the power couple have attended many public event together in recent months. They even opened up about each other to the media while attending the events.
During an interview with Esquire UK earlier in March, Penn spoke of his future with Theron.
He said:
You say I’ve been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today. So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, “Without tradition, new things die”. And I don’t want new things to die.
Penn was previously married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989. A few years later, he married “House of Cards” actress Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010. He told Esquire UK that he felt happy to be able to fall in love again in his 50s. He added, “53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late. But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling. It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it.”
Penn and Theron have known each other for decades before they became one of Hollywood’s most powerful couples. They got secretly engaged in December last year during a trip to Paris. At that time, an insider said, “There’s no ring, but they are committed”.
When Esquire asked Theron about her relationship with Penn, she said she was “shocked” to have fallen for Penn.
The 39-year-old actress added:
I’m a very, very, very lucky girl. Very lucky. He’s hot. He is hot. How do you say that in an interview? You’re a forty-year-old woman sounding like a sixteen-year-old. There’s something beautiful about that, but you lack the articulation of really saying what it’s like when somebody walks into your life and makes you see something that you really never thought you’d be able to see. If somebody had said to me, “This is what it will be”, I would’ve said, “F*** off”. As you can see, it makes me smile.
Sadly, the Cannes Film Festival that happened in last month (May) is the last time they appeared together. According to Us Weekly, Theron was the one to cut off her relationship with Penn.
Theron’s most recent credits include 2014’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West” and “Mad Max: Fury Road“, in which she plays badass female warrior, Imperator Furiosa. As for Penn, he recently starred alongside Idris Elba in 2015’s “The Gunman”, which grossed only $16.4 million against a budget of $40 million.
Their split may prove to be awkward for Penn and Theron as Penn’s latest directorial effort, “The Last Face”, stars Theron in the leading role.
