“24” will be back, but Jack Bauer will not.
It’s definitely a bittersweet experience for fans of the TV series as 20th Century Fox Television confirmed that “24” will indeed have a spin-off, but it will not feature the espionage agent, Jack Bauer.
The announcement was made by Howard Gordon, executive producer of the original TV series, during the Critics Choice Television Award that was held last Sunday (31st May).
According to TV Line, the “24” spin-off will focus on a yet to be named male terrorist hunter who is in his twenties. The main antihero will also find himself working along with an older but more experienced female agent. Manny Coto and Evan Katz, writers and producers for “24: Live Another Day”, will return to the spin-off to serve as writers and executive producers. “24: Live Another Day” is also known as the 9th season of the action thriller.
Fans of the franchise will be glad to know that the spin-off will be keeping with the habit of unveiling drama in real time. Mid last month, Gordon told Yahoo TV that “real-time concept is just a really cool narrative engine” and the next project will be kept “in the “24”-verse”. As a result, the studio decided to tell the story in a way that will keep with “the tradition of “24””.
The spin-off will be launched as a limited series, but Gordon also expressed hope for the series to take off. He stated:
It could be a series like last, a limited series like”Live Another Day”. But, in success, one that could hopefully go beyond its first run, become its own bonafide series.
There are currently no plans for Bauer to appear in the spin-off, but it cannot be dismissed that the character portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland will possibly be making several cameo appearances throughout the production.
