With critics and fans alike calling it “the best action movie of all time”, the demand for a sequel is only getting higher.
After leading actor Tom Hardy revealed that he has signed on to reprise his role a few more times, Miller has disclosed more information regarding the sequel in a recent interview on “The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith“.
As you may already know, “Fury Road” has been in development hell for almost 25 years and it was originally slated to film in 2001. The director was also forced to recast Max when original actor Mel Gibson was in his well publicised meltdown. As such, Hardy was chosen to replace Gibson in the movie.
Though “Fury Road” is said to be the sequel to the original “Mad Max” franchise, Miller considered it to be the first of a trilogy as producer Doug Mitchell said that a script has already been written for its sequel.
It was rumoured that the sequel will focus on Charlize Theron‘s character, as it was tentatively titled “Furiosa”. It should also be noted that Miller revealed that he was originally planing to make an anime based on Furiosa’s backstory.
When asked about the sequel, Mille said:
We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays (on “Fury Road”), and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.
However, the filmmaker also said that the sequel now has a new title – “Mad Max: The Wasteland”. This spurred confusion among fans, as it is unclear whether the screenplay has been rewritten or remains unchanged. It certainly aroused curiosities as to whether a spin-off movie based on Furiosa will be developed instead.
No matter what the sequel will be called, we hope that it will be as good as the original. In fact, we hope to see more Max and Furiosa in it!
