While driving is certainly the preferred mode of transport in KL, you’ll also hear a lot of complaints regarding the roads. From plain bad driving to sudden roadwork to the bad condition of roads, it’s a veritable mixed bag of problems. Unfortunately, these complaints aren’t for no reason. They can take lives, after all.

Three days ago, a 17-year-old boy was riding his motorbike through Batu Pahat, Johor. His trip was cut short when he hit a manhole cover on the road. The accident caused him serious injuries, including a head injury that sent him into a coma. Although doctors fought to keep him alive, on 3rd November, he succumbed to his injuries.

The accident had taken place on 1st November around 6am. The boy, Steven Chua (蔡伟杰), had been travelling to school via a motorbike. Unfortunately, he never made it. It is suspected that Steven’s bike had hit a manhole cover on the road. The accident left him critically injured.

Steven was rushed to the hospital for treatment. However, he later fell into a coma as there was a haemorrhage in his brain. Said haemorrhage also caused multiple organs failure. Steven remained in a coma for two days, with his family and friends constantly visiting, hoping for a miracle.

Unfortunately, Steven did not make it. On 3rd November, his uncle confirmed that his nephew had passed away at 2am. He shared that while the news has been upsetting for many, it has been unbearable for Steven’s grandmother.

Steven’s mom too has been mourning. She uploaded a short video of him on her socials, accompanied by a short message. “Farewell to my son, (you are) no longer in pain. (Your) mother will be strong. Don’t worry, let go of everything,” she wrote as a final goodbye. “I love you.”

His mother’s last interaction with Steven had been at the hospital while he was in the coma. She had called for him while he was under and many are certain he heard her as Steven was seen shedding tears although he was still unconscious then.

Our hearts go out to all who knew him. May they find peace in his passing. We also hope local authorities will do their best to prevent such incidents from happening again.
