Pet peeves are things you find extremely annoying, but they’re usually just minor things. Everyone has a pet peeve. Nobody can fault you for harbouring a pet peeve or two, or even a hundred. It can be a friend who interrupts you when you speak, or the sound of clicking pens, or even when people look at you. Whatever it is, it’s a cause of great annoyance.
Here are 13 common pet peeves that we all could probably agree are DAMNED IRRITATING!
Chewing Sound
Making chewing noises when you eat definitely gets under the skin. Your table companion starts making all these mushy, chompy noises when you just want to eat quietly, which makes you hesitate to do so. If they constantly make the noises, do address the issue politely. But if there is no change, you might as well skip having meals with that person or eat beforehand.
Texting During Meals
You undoubtedly already know how annoying it can be if you’ve ever gone out to dinner with a friend or your lover only to have them glued to their phone the entire time. It’s impolite, inconsiderate, and most certainly won’t make you want to hang out with them more.
Scraping Silverware
This sound makes you so angry that you might end up hitting the person who made it. Whether they’re scraping the silverware with their teeth or on their plates while they eat, this sound is almost similar to scraping nails on a chalkboard. Also, don’t you know it’s rude and impolite to do so?
Talking During Movies
You’re watching a movie when suddenly your friend or partner nudges in to say something. Like, why? Can’t it wait till the movie ends? The same holds true when using your phone in a dimly lit cinema. You’ll just be a distraction to those who paid good money to watch a movie.
Being Late
Although everyone is occasionally late, persistent tardiness is extremely annoying and shows a lack of respect for the persons you are meeting. The worst problem is that notoriously tardy people hardly ever change. And because they are perpetually late, their friends and family just start advising them to show up an hour early. Another annoying part is when they keep saying “I’m on my way” when you’re on the phone, asking where they are.
The Know-It-Alls
Nobody enjoys a smug know-it-all, whether you’re conversing with them in person or in a text thread. Period. Because, let’s face it, no one can possibly be all-knowing. They are the types of people who enjoy being the centre of attention just because they seem to be experts on every subject under the sun. And the pouting look emerges if they are corrected or shut down. What a pain!
Asking About Marriage Or Kids
At every function you go to, there’s always a bunch of oldies who keep asking when you’ll get married or when you’ll have kids. Even if you do have a partner or a kid, they go on asking what their religion and race is, and when the next kid is coming. Seriously, what’s with these people?
Staring
Picture this: some random weirdo keeps their eyes fixed on you the entire time you are shopping. Are they stalking you? Well, it’s not really stalking – more like gawking. While there are various cultural taboos against staring, it’s generally a good idea to avoid it, because it will likely make people feel uneasy.
Non-apology Apologies
An apology is more than just saying “I’m sorry you feel that way” or “mistakes were made.” The only genuine expression of regret is one that is followed by silence. If you use an “if,” “but,” or other qualifier, it will be quite clear that your apology is not sincere. Even worse is when they suddenly turn the conversation into something about themselves by telling you that they’ve experienced something similar or worse.
Spoilers
It can be a challenge keeping up with the number of movies and shows that drop every week. So, don’t assume that everyone has the same amount of free time for binge-watching stuff like you do. Give spoilers a break, will ya’? And for those who have all the time in the world to keep up with the latest shows or movies, try not to constantly pop someone’s bubble with spoilers. Fair and square.
Pushy Vegans
We don’t get why some vegans have to get all pushy and over-protective over nature and animals. It’s our business what we eat and we are solely responsible for what we put in our mouths. We already know about things like slaughterhouses and heart disease, believe it or not. Plus, nobody consumes meat without being aware of the risks. At the same time, we’re also aware of the drawbacks to becoming a vegan – lack of humor and being judgmental. Anyway, if you’re vegan, well, good for you!
People Who Suddenly Get Close To You
For a minute, they barely talk or even smile at you. But out of the blue, they’ll call you their relative or best friend. This happens mostly when you’ve achieved something big in your life or when you’re loaded. They only want to be close to you so that they don’t miss out on the good stuff. Fakes!
Fiddling With A Car Driver’s Radio
Excuse me but who says you can fiddle with the radio? Leave the radio alone if you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle. These people don’t care what music they think should be playing or what songs are on your playlist, either – they just want to fiddle. If you really want to mess around with the radio, at least get permission first.
