Some advertisements are incredibly well done while others are somewhat questionable. ZUS Coffee is guilty of both but more so on the questionable side. Regardless, they’ve certainly attracted a lot of attention and their latest campaign has brought in more customers than usual.
The brand recently launched their new collaboration with Niko Neko Matcha, a local brand that offers different variations of matcha drinks, which feature adorable cat merchandise. As a way to promote this campaign, ZUS Coffee showcases a video of a cat licking the menu screen at every outlet and although this advertisement has been up for quite some time, it has recently reached the international level.
Yesterday (Wednesday, 3rd July), popular Twitter page @/nocontextcats reposted a video by Xiaohongsu user @/momo of ZUS’s Coffee ad which features a cat licking the menu screen at one of their outlets. The post was simply captioned, “The perfect ad doesn’t exi- ,” insinuating that the Malaysian brand has reached all requirements to create a flawless promo video and we personally have no objections.
The tweet went viral quite literally overnight, now reaching over 4.4 million views at the time of writing. As expected, the post has made its way back to our shores with plenty of Malaysians being proud of the representation. Even ZUS Coffee themselves responded to the video saying, “Mom, we’ve made it.” Others took the opportunity to further promote the brand and the “Matcha Macam” campaign by showcasing the drinks they ordered and the merch they got.
In case you’re wondering who was the artist behind these adorable cartoon cats on the merch, Shafiqah Othman, who is a writer, columnist and ZUS Coffee creative director, shared on her LinkedIn that her younger sibling was the illustrator. “My younger sibling has contributed their artistic talent to ZUS Coffee. It fills me with immense pride and happiness to see my loved ones’ work being appreciated and celebrated. These campaigns are not just about promoting a brand; they are also intimate expressions of my family’s creativity and love,” she wrote.
