When actors film an intimate scene, it can be rather difficult for them – or at least embarrassing. Recently, Hong Kong actor Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) revealed that Andy Lau (刘德华) made an awkward mistake when filming his kiss scene with Maggie Cheung (張曼玉).
The story came up when Francis was on the show “Memories Beyond Horizon Season 2 (无限超越班第二季)”, where renowned actors share their experiences and knowledge about the industry with their industry juniors. During a recent episode, the actor and his fellow show mentors talked about their experience with filming kissing scenes.
Amidst the conversation, Francis brought up Andy Lau’s experience with filming a kissing scene with his “As Tears Goes By (旺角卡門)” co-star, Maggie Cheung. The 1988 movie is filmmaker Wong Kar Wai’s (王家卫) directorial debut and stars Andy, Maggie and actor Jacky Cheung (张学友). According to Francis, Andy and Maggie were fairly new to the industry during the filming and thus, had little experience with romantic scenes.
He revealed that both stars were particularly nervous with each other and ended up using too much force during the kiss. The excessive force caused Andy and Maggie to clumsily knock their teeth together during what was supposed to be a romantic moment. It was also said that Maggie even chipped her tooth because of this incident. However, the two continued filming and the mistake was only known after the director had yelled cut.
Thankfully, it didn’t seem like the incident had negatively affected the movie’s success as it ended up being a cult classic from 80s cinema in Hong Kong. It even earned a Best Film nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards and earned Jacky a win for Best Supporting Actor.
