Last night (14th April, Sunday), hundreds and thousands of people tuned into the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards, held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The ceremony, dubbed Hong Kong’s Academy Award, recognised achievements in the Hong Kong film industry and awards the best movies and actors in the past year.
A total of 23 films received nominations at the ceremony’s 42nd edition – with crime drama “The Goldfinger” taking 12 nominations. The film won a total of six awards during the night but unfortunately, it didn’t win the coveted Best Film award. However, the movie’s main man Tony Leung (梁朝偉) did win the award for Best Actor, making the win his sixth Best Actor win from the Hong Kong Film Awards.
In his acceptance speech, the 62-year-old expressed his joy for winning the award, thanking the ceremony and his acquaintances in the industry. Tony also thanked his wife, Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), who accepted the trophy on his behalf as the actor did not appear at the ceremony in person. The actress also took the opportunity to praise her husband and his achievements.
In her speech, the actress called Tony “a very great actor”, adding that he’s very dedicated to his work. She said, “I think most actors would put in 100% or 200% effort (into their acting) but Tony puts in 500%, 1000% of effort”. She also said Hong Kong should be proud to have an amazing actor like Tony. The star got embarrassed by the sudden praise from his wife and shouted back, “I’m not that great!”.
