Women Use Facebook Group To Trade Information About Men From Dating Apps

Facebook groups are great for sharing information with other people within the same circle – but this Singapore-based group is getting heat after several men noted that they’re being “reviewed” by the group’s members.

According to a report by AsiaOne, the Facebook group ‘SG Woman Ask’ is where thousands of women trade information about the men they have met from dating apps in Singapore. One of the men was an expat who said he felt uncomfortable after finding out his profile was posted on the group and reviewed by the members, some of whom he had previously matched with on dating apps.

Another man, who found out about the group through someone he matched, also voiced his opinion. He lamented that the group was a platform for nosey women to gossip about harmless men after his profile received comments claiming he was untrustworthy because he talks to many girls. While he agreed the group had good intentions, he said the experience “left a very bitter taste in his mouth”.

Indeed, the group does claim to serve a greater purpose of protecting female users from getting involved with the wrong man. According to one member, the group is “an open forum for women to call out douchebags” as members often share about men who have allegedly sexually harassed, gaslighted or scammed them to warn others. The Facebook user claims the members do more than review men because they also share relationship support and advice. There were also instances of the members offering to “save” one another if they were on a terrible date.

Despite the criticism about potentially doxing the men they met, the group member revealed that the women have to abide by the group’s content rules, which include never sharing personal details of the men in the post, only using their first names and no bullying the men or the other members.

However, a criminal lawyer said the group members may be liable for criminal prosecution under Singapore’s Protection from Harassment Act (Poha). The lawyer also added that any post that can cause distress to the person mentioned can be considered harassment, regardless of intention. On the other hand, a relationship counsellor said that the group could provide a sense of community and support for women, who can use the information shared to help them navigate the dating scene.

It seems there are many opinions about this particular Facebook group and what the members do behind closed doors – but what do you think about the group? Do you think it’s a good forum for women trying to meet “the one”? Or are the men right to say it’s a form of harassment?
