Besides visiting families during the Chinese New Year holiday, many Chinese Malaysians also make it a tradition to visit cinemas to check out all the new CNY films. For this year, several movies were released over the same weekend, making for a tough competition amongst all the recent releases.

Amongst all the CNY movies, Singaporean production “Money No Enough 3” took first place in the Malaysian box office, gaining a jaw-dropping RM5.38 million during its opening weekend. The comedy movie directed by Jack Neo is the long-awaited sequel to his highly popular “Money No Enough” franchise. Like its predecessors, this third film also stars comedians Mark Lee and Henry Thia.

The CNY movies placing second and third place in the local box office are the Hong Kong action comedy film “Rob N Roll” and Malaysian-made “All In”. “Rob N Roll” stars Aaron Kwok, Gordon Lam and Richie Jen and managed to earn over RM3.7 million during its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Namewee’s poker comedy “All In” recorded over RM2.15 million in sales by the second day of the Chinese New Year (11th February).

Several other CNY releases that earned over RM100,000 in sales over the busy weekend include Hong Kong comedy “Table For Six 2”, local flick “Happy Dragons” and Andy Lau’s satirical comedy “The Movie Emperor’. The critically acclaimed drama by local director Tunku Mona Riza, “Rain Town” also attracted many viewers over the weekend. Closing off the Top 8 is Hong Kong heist thriller “The Moon Thieves” which stars MIRROR members Edan Lui and Anson Lo.
