Vladislav and his vampire gang from “What We Do In The Shadows” will be featured in another documentary again!
Jemaine Clement, who co-wrote and co-directed the New Zealand mockumentary horror comedy film, recently confirmed to Stuff.co.nz that a sequel is currently in the planning stages.
“What We Do In The Shadows” premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival before it was released in a limited release on selected theatres earlier this year. It starred Clement himself as the 862-year-old vampire, Vladislav.
In the film, Vlad shares a flat in Wellington, New Zealand with a group of vampires namely Viago (379 years old, played by Taika Waititi), Deacon (183 years old, played by Jonathan Brugh), and Petyr (8,000 years old, played by Ben Fransham).
However, due to their constant thirst for blood and fear of sunlight, they have troubles trying to cope with the complexities of the modern life and make new friends. As a result, they’ve lost touch with the current social scene, especially when the club bouncers won’t invite them in the hip establishments.
The film received very positive reviews from critics, with American digital TV network Fearnet calling it “a great vampire comedy”. It gained generally favourable reviews from UK newspapers as well, with The Guardian’s film critic Peter Bradshaw calling it “the best comedy of the year” and The Telegraph’s Tim Robey describing it as “desperately funny”.
With its surprise success, Clement confirmed that a sequel is in the works and it will focus on Anton, a polite werewolf leader played by Rhys Darby. If you’ve seen the film, you might remember him as the guy who reminds his followers that they’re “werewolves, not swearwolves”.
Clement also mentioned in a separate interview with the AV Club that the movie will have a spin-off TV series too. He said that he and Waititi (who also co-wrote and co-directed “What We Do In The Shadows” are pitching a show about the 2 cops (played by Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue) as seen in the movie.
However, he also added, “We’ve already been told before we even handed it in that there’s no money for comedy.”
Clement can currently be seen in indie comedy “People Places Things” and he will be heard next year in Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG”.
