What NOT To Do This Upcoming GE15 Voting Day

Voting is a vital part of our lives. It determines how the nation will move forward, whether good or bad, it all comes down to who you vote for. So make sure to research the political candidates in your area before you check off that box!

It is also important for you to be aware of the necessary preparations, like what to do and what NOT to do on voting day. So here are 6 things you should definitely not do on voting day to avoid wasting your vote this upcoming 19th November.

1. Don’t use your phone

Before the voting process starts, an SPR representative will ask you to leave your phone at a designated area. When you are done marking your ballots, only then are you allowed to retrieve your phone. Rest assured, nothing bad will happen to your phones! This is to avoid any picture-taking during the whole process.

2. Don’t forget your IC

Voters MUST bring their MyKad Identification Card (IC) for the SPR representatives to be able to identify them. Also, please bring your original IC and not any printed-out version of it. If you do not currently own an IC or have lost your IC, please head to the nearest police station before d-day.

3. Don’t wear clothes with any party’s logo

This should be obvious. It is common knowledge that a voter’s vote must remain anonymous. Therefore wearing any party shirts could result in voters getting fined and losing the chance to cast your vote. So, for one day only, wear whatever you want but keep it respectful and avoid party logo shirts!

4. Don’t paint your nails

Yes, this is true. The voting process includes voters dipping their index finger in black ink. Having painted nails (or incredibly long gel manicures) will hinder this process, and thus, might even affect your vote. It’ll also definitely ruin your expensive manicure too. So book your manicure sessions after 19th November, okay?

5. Don’t doodle all over the ballot paper

The most important part of voting is, of course, the vote itself. Any markings on your ballot paper may cause your vote to be disqualified. Ask an SPR representative nearby for assistance if your ballot has any unnecessary markings. Additionally, make sure to check the serial number and the certified stamp on your ballot paper.

4. Walk to the second representative, and dip your index finger into the ink when asked.

6. Walk towards the head of the polling station, and leave your phone.

7. Proceed to the voting area, and mark a clear ‘X’ next to who you want to vote (only one please).
