The fourth instalment of “The Matrix” is officially happening, featuring original cast Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
It was also revealed that director Lana Wachowski is set to make her return in the series. This time around she will also be in charge of writing the screenplay in addition to directing the movie.
Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement yesterday (Monday, 20th August 2019), “We could not be more excited to be re-entering “The Matrix” with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in “The Matrix” universe.”
The 3 previous films – “The Matrix” (1999), “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003) – have earned more than $1.6 billion worldwide and were all Top 10 domestic hits in their year of release. “The Matrix Revolutions” was also the first film ever to release simultaneously in every major country at the same hour around the world.
Wachowski expressed her excitement for the upcoming project during an interview, “Many of the ideas Lilly (Wachowski) and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2020, with Wachowski also co-writing with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. While the plot of the film is still under wraps, fans are expecting the movie to be a direct continuation from the last Matrix franchise.
