While zoos can be a fun and exciting trip for the whole family, there’s rarely anything new and exciting unless you’re witnessing the birth of a baby mammal or if the zoo introduces an incredibly rare breed or species of animals.

So what if you combine those two? That’s exactly what happened at this zoo in the United States! They’ve been making headlines today after introducing to the world its first and only spotless giraffe!

Brights Zoo, located in Washington County, Tennessee, has officially introduced to the world its new member of the giraffe family. As seen in the video above, unlike all giraffes, this calf was born without any spots or patterns on its coat. The zoo revealed that the tiny mammal was born late last month on 31st July and is the only spotless giraffe in the world.

It’s also safe to assume that this little one will never be released in the wild as the spots are used as a form of camouflage to hide from predators. “This special giraffe’s birth is remarkable for many reasons, but maybe most importantly, it will help bring attention to the serious challenges the rest of her species face in the wild,” the zoo said in a press release.

The wildlife park also added that they hope the international coverage of the spotless calf will help bring more awareness to giraffe conservation. According to their statement, 40% of the wild giraffe population was lost over the last 3 decades.

Apart from introducing the little calf to the world, Brights Zoo also asked the public to help name the animal. The zoo has shortlisted 4 names and posted them on their official Facebook page where netizens will then cast their votes on which name will be given to the unique baby giraffe.

For your information, while Brights Zoo’s newest member may be the only spotless giraffe in the world today, it’s not actually the first. Another spotless giraffe was filmed on camera in Tokyo Zoo, Japan back in 1967.
