Remember the mishap at the 2017 Academy Awards when the presenters announced the wrong winner for Best Picture? Or the time Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the wrong winner of Miss Universe in 2015? These incidents have been immortalised on TV and will forever remain on the internet, but did you know that a similar incident occurred in Malaysia as well?

Malaysian-born singer-songwriter Yuna didn’t hold back in bringing up the past in her latest TikTok post. The songstress shared a video on her channel, joining the trend where people use trauma dumps to explain how they ended up becoming very funny. She recalled the 18th Anugerah Industri Muzik in 2011, where she had to return her award because they had announced the wrong winner.

As seen in the screenshot, Yuna jokingly explained why she’s funny, saying, “When I was 23, I thought I had won the Best Song Award at an awards show, but then I had to return it because they made a mistake by announcing the wrong winner (me). It was all on TV.” Although the singer didn’t specify the award ceremony, but it was clear that she was referring to the AIM18. In her captions, the singer clarified that she has no hard feelings anymore as it’s all in the past.

For context, during the AIM18 broadcast that year, Yuna was announced as the winner of the Best Song Award for her track “Penakut”. However, it was later discovered that the organiser had incorrectly selected her song as the winner due to a misinterpretation of the awards criteria. Singer Anuar Zain was meant to be the actual recipient of the award for his song “Sedetik Lebih”.  “We would like to record our sincere apologies for any difficulties that may have been caused,” said the organising committee at the time.

During a press conference, Anuar Zain responded that it didn’t feel right for him to accept the award, as he had fully accepted that Yuna was the winner that evening. “I believe that the award should not have been returned. There was no need to announce this mistake. I highly respect Yuna, especially now for being willing to hand over the award, but I truly hope that this incident will not happen again in the future,” he told reporters.

As for how Yuna felt at the time, the singer did not comment on the incident but instead thanked her fans for loving her song. Years have passed, and we now have an idea of how she must’ve felt about the entire thing. Fans reacted to the post, with many recalling reading about the incident in the news after celebrating her win.
