It’s hard to find a decent job these days and it’s even harder to start saving up money when there are commitments like rent, bills, and debt that need to be paid. Many have also struggled to survive because of overdue payments or salaries.

Speaking of overdue salaries, this Thai restaurant in Kuala Lumpur may be on the verge of closing down after it was alleged that their boss ran away, leaving the employees struggling to keep the business alive. Here’s what happened:

Over the weekend, Bangkok Wasabe & So Thai restaurant in MyTOWN KL posted a video on their TikTok channel to share with their customers that they’ve lowered the price of their menu. However, the announcement was not to promote a special discount but to inform customers that their boss has allegedly run away due to the business being in crippling debt, leaving the employees desperate for their overdue salaries.

“In order to cover our overdue salaries, we’ve lowered the price of our menu so that people will order from us. Please help us and dine in,” the restaurant wrote in the video. It is understood that the discounted food is their last resort in order to make ends meet. According to the video’s caption, many of the restaurant’s staff have resigned; plus, business has been slow lately.

The remaining employees expressed their fear that they may not be able to cover RM96k on time. The staff apparently had to buy ingredients using their own money in order to sustain the business. “We’re grateful to MyTOWN’s management for helping us but it all depends on whether or not our customers will come and dine in,” they said before adding that they hope their former boss gets punished for what he’s done.

The TikTok post soon went viral with netizens sympathising with the Bangkok Wasabe & So Thai employees. Some condemned the irresponsible employer for leaving the restaurant and its staff to fend for themselves. Others believed that this is all part of a marketing strategy to which the establishment replied, “As long as it can attract customers. Either way, we may have to close down sooner or later as we’re very understaffed”.

At the time of writing, MyTOWN KL has yet to release a statement regarding the restaurant’s ordeal. Whether or not the restaurant will close down, we hope that things will get better for the employees.
