Over the weekend, Malaysians witnessed the appointment of Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim as the Regent of Johor. The appointment took place at the Johor royal palace, Istana Bukit Serene. It was in anticipation of Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar’s ascent to the federal throne as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong this week. With this appointment, Tunku Ismail will henceforth be known as His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, The Regent of Johor. The appointment will stand as long as Sultan Ibrahim takes on the responsibilities as the Agong.

Many attended the appointment ceremony, including Sultan Ibrahim, who personally drove himself to the ceremony. His Majesty was seen behind the wheel of a Dodge model car as security personnel followed him in several black SUVs. In the meantime, the Johor ruler is expected to leave the Istana Bukit Serene for Istana Negara on 31st January for his ascension to the federal throne.

According to reports, over 30,000 locals are expected to bid farewell to His Majesty as he leaves for the Royal Hangar in Senai. Johor police chief CP M Kumar said the 35.5-kilometre route from the royal palace to the royal hangar will be closed to facilitate the royal sending-off ceremony. There will be 15 celebration checkpoint locations throughout the route for Johor citizens to partake in the ceremony.

Several roads in Kuala Lumpur will also be closed tomorrow (30th January) in conjunction with the sending-off ceremony for the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, as he completes his reign. City police announced that seven routes in the capital will be fully closed starting at 9am, while 13 routes will be closed in stages. Authorities advise the public to plan their journey as the road closures could affect many drivers.

Sultan Ibrahim will begin his reign as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 31st January for a five-year term. It will be the first time His Majesty will hold the post of Agong since he ascended to the Johor throne in 2010. Sultan Ibrahim’s late father, Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail, was the last Johor Sultan to hold the position of Agong in 1989, which was 35 years ago.
