In Malaysia, higher authorities have made it so easy for us to travel to our neighbouring countries. We can simply rent a vehicle, or take public transport to get to our destinations. The only catch is to do proper research before going on the trip to prevent wasting unnecessary money. This goes the same for our neighbouring folks entering Malaysia.
Just recently, a Singaporean TikToker uploaded a video on TikTok sharing her story of how she almost got “scammed” by the Malaysian toll system but was helped instead. Tiktoker Nicole Liel shared her funny story of Malaysian hospitality, despite hearing stories of robbers and scammers in Malaysia.

On the day of the ‘not-scam’, the influencer rented a car for a trip from Singapore going into Malaysia. The trip consisted of four, apparently clueless, Singaporeans. Everything went smoothly until they reached a toll booth in Malaysia. Realising that no one in the car brought a Touch N Go card, they were forced to ask for help from a Malaysian car behind them.
The rear car told them that he had a balance of RM200 on their Touch N Go and because of this, the group assumed the massive amount was the actual toll fare. “How can I spend $200 just on one toll? (If) you need to pass 5 tolls in Malaysia right, I have to spend $1000, one way, to go into Singapore. Sounds like the math is not ‘mathing’ (adding up),” said Nicole.
Seeing previous cars with a balance of more or less RM40, they assumed again that the toll fare was around that amount. Realising this, one of the Singaporeans left the car to retrieve the balance of RM150. Still thinking it was absurdly expensive, they let it go and continued on.
When they finally left the toll booth, the rear car patiently followed them all the way to a rest stop, even trailing them at a slow pace of 90km per hour. When the car finally caught up to them, he explained that the toll was not that expensive and that it was only RM4. Already surprised and grateful for the honesty, the man gave back their leftover RM50 – not wanting to charge a mere RM4.
Scrolling through the comment section, a lot of netizens were impressed with the honest Malaysian that helped out, saying they have mad respect for the guy. One netizen thanked the former NOC talent for showing Malaysia in a more positive light. But most netizens just replied that even they thought that RM200 for a toll was too much and that they themselves wouldn’t pay that much.
