K-pop fans are known to go above and beyond when it comes to supporting their favourite idols, especially their biases. Some have lined up for special live events in the wee hours of the morning while others spent a crazy amount of money for an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience of watching their idols film their next music video.
On top of that, many have shown no hesitation when it comes to purchasing official merchandise, which is also known to be quite expensive. With that being said, who knew the idols themselves would disapprove of their fans spending too much money on them? Here’s how NCT Dream (엔시티 드림)’s Jaemin (나재민) reacted after finding out how much this particular fan spent to get her hands on his photocards:

Earlier this week, NCT Dream held a video call fan sign, an event that is much like an actual meet-and-greet but virtually. The video calls are usually recorded and posted by the fans themselves. Member Jaemin was talking to this European fan online, who was showing off her photocard collection to him.
At one point during the call, the idol was left in disbelief when he found out how much the merch cost the fan. “This [photocard] is one of the more expensive ones. It was EUR€7,500 (RM36,659),” the fan embarrassingly admitted while trying to hide her face behind the valuable item. If that wasn’t shocking enough, the fan explained that her collection amounted up to a Birkin bag. “One Birkin bag?!” the surprised idol asked.
“I know this is ridiculous but I feel like it’s really worth it,” the fan answered while the K-pop star was trying to process what he had just heard. We can’t be too sure about how much the fan actually spent, but according to Collectors Cage, depending on the model, the newer types of Birkin bags cost from approximately USD$12,000 (RM53,716) to up to a staggering USD$2,000,000 (RM8.9 million). The cheapest, however, would cost around USD$8,500 (RM38,000).

After the video call went viral, many were mostly amused by Jaemin’s shocked and concerned reaction towards the fan’s confession. Some suggested that NCT member should teach his audience how to properly manage their finances.
There were also those who were just as dumbfounded by the absurdity fans would be willing to spend in order to get a specific merch in their possession. Regardless of whether or not she bought her collection from the official SM online store or resellers, it’s evident that K-pop fans would do anything for their idols.
