Everyone has an opinion these days and with the internet culture these days, people have the tendency to get really nasty since one can always hide behind the keyboard and type whatever the heck they want. But, sometimes it’s better to stay silent and keep these thoughts to one’s self. As the saying goes, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

It’s always a double-edge sword when it comes to social media. This netizen was not happy about what they saw recently and it sparked a huge argument on Twitter. Here’s what happened:

We used to go to war. https://t.co/kDnRDUJnDv

— Bitcoin Malaya (@bitcoinmalaya) March 7, 2023

Yesterday (Wednesday, 8th March), a netizen who goes by @bitcoinmalaya on Twitter was apparently not having it as they shared a video of K-pop fans, specifically BLINKs, participating in a BLACKPINK Random Dance Challenge on the day of the idol group’s concert at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The video showed the fans, mainly male, joyfully dancing to the song “Shut Down”.

“We used to go to war,” the netizen wrote, possibly insinuating that the young men in the video are weak or spoiled compared to the men who fought for Malaysia’s freedom. The ambiguous tweet could have also suggested that men nowadays are too feminine to be enlisted in the military. The video then went viral, now reaching over 4 million views at the time of writing, and also garnered a lot of reactions from netizens.

While some agreed with the Twitter user’s statement, most were very against the toxic masculinity that was projected. Many netizens, including men, would rather have young people have fun and enjoy themselves than die in a horrific war. Others criticised the anonymous crypto seller for having such a toxic mindset. There was also a journalist, who claimed to have witnessed the outcome of war, defending the K-pop fans in the video.

After the heavy backlash, @bitcoinmalaya responded by saying that they don’t condone physical or verbal violence and that netizens were overreacting. At the time of writing, the user has yet to offer an apology for any possible misunderstanding.

If the netizen was projecting toxic masculinity then we hope they can change their way of thinking.
