While escalators are common in shopping malls, many unfortunate accidents have occurred on these moving staircases. Recently, a Setapak mall became the subject of news after a young girl unfortunately had her toes stuck on one of the mall’s escalators.

TikTok user Muhammad Azre shared videos of the horrifying incident, alleging that it happened at the Setapak Central mall. The two videos show the young girl being consoled by her mother as firefighters attempt to free her leg caught in an escalator.

According to a spokesperson for the City Fire and Rescue Department, the Kuala Lumpur Operations Centre received an emergency call at 4:56pm. A team of firemen from the Setapak station rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts to free the girl’s jammed foot.

The five-member squad led by PBK Operations Commander II Shamsul Bahri Hashim took roughly 40 minutes to free the girl’s foot from the escalator. A medical team present at the scene then provided on-site emergency treatment to the young victim. The obtained preliminary information showed that one of her toes was fractured while two more were injured. The PBK Operations Commander also revealed the young girl was admitted to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for her injuries. Setapak Central Mall has yet to issue a statement on the incident, but the mall’s management did assist in the rescue efforts.

Netizens have expressed concern towards the young victim, wishing her a speedy recovery. However, many also questioned the cause of the accident, debating whether it was due to a faulty escalator or external causes like lack of parental supervision or inappropriate footwear. Similar incidents have happened before, leading many to advise the public to be more cautious when on the escalator.

We wish the young girl a speedy recovery. We also hope this incident will remind others to be more careful when on an escalator in the future.
