“How Much Is Your Outfit” is a genre of video that has been trending on social media lately because, admittedly, netizens get very curious about what luxury brands people are wearing out and about. However, these videos also shed light on what these individuals do for a living – which isn’t always morally right.
Local influencer Sam Wong has grown a following by creating these outfit review videos where he interviews people in local malls to share what they’re wearing. However, in a recent video, the influencer received flak for indirectly promoting sugar babies and an illegal escort website. In the video, the influencer interviewed a woman who showed off her almost RM200,000 outfit, which included high-end items like a Hermes handbag and a Cartier ring.
After detailing her outfit and the cost, the woman revealed that she works as a sugar baby affiliated with Sugarbook. She also proudly claims that she’s happy with her job and would prefer dating her sugar daddy than any of her previous broke boyfriends. If you’re curious, the Sugarbook website is described as an online dating platform but previously faced backlash for allegedly promoting immoral activities. The site is also non-accessible in Malaysia unless using a virtual private network (VPN).
The video received mixed reactions from netizens, with many angered that the video indirectly promotes illegal activities. Many said the woman should be ashamed of her job rather than proudly confessing to it. However, some have also supported the woman, saying she’s not engaging in illegal activities and should be free to do what she wants.
Some netizens claim that the “sugar baby” might not be truthful about her luxury items. Many claim that her bag and jewellery are counterfeit, based on how they look compared to the real deal. These claims also led to many netizens shaming her for using fake branded items to present a luxurious lifestyle.
