Remember when we reported an incident where a customer had found maggots in the soy sauce bottle while at a sushi restaurant? Well, unfortunately, it happened again – this time to a man in Sabah at a different sushi franchise.
The man, a doctor named Azrul Razak, took to Facebook this week to talk about his regretful experience at a popular eatery. His detailed post also included videos of the soy sauce bottle where you can clearly see maggots squirming around.
According to the post, the incident happened on 20th May when the man was dining at Sushi Zanmai Suria Sabah. He claimed that after finishing his meal, he spotted something in the corner of his eye. Upon closer inspection, he realised they were maggots in the soy sauce he had just consumed.
The man complained to the staff on duty but the restaurant supervisor just discarded the soy sauce without saying anything. When asked to inspect the other soy sauce bottles, the supervisor allegedly said they were fine without attempting to check and left the table. When he was paying for his meal, the medical practitioner asked for the manager but they were unavailable for contact.
According to the post, the supervisor only contacted the manager after the doctor showed his Health Worker Calling card and threatened to bring the issue to the authorities. Azrul said he only received an apology from the branch manager after he had left the restaurant. When asked about the standard operating procedure (SOP), the manager did not respond and only apologised. The doctor had also sent a direct message to Sushi Zanmai’s Instagram account but has not received a reply.
Upon returning home, the doctor experienced stomachache and continuous diarrhoea for two days. After the incident, the man received a call from the Sushi Zanmai Kota Kinabalu team, apologising for the incident. They clarified that the issue could be the soy sauce supplier’s fault and not the restaurant’s.
The man then discovered that the restaurant’s SOP for soy sauce bottles was washing the bottles and switching out the condiment twice a week. The doctor chastised the restaurant for not having a proper SOP to deal with these situations.
The post ended with Azrul claiming to have made a formal complaint to the health inspector but is unsure if any action would be taken. He then urged everyone who experienced a similar issue from the day of the incident to bring it up to the authorities.
