It’s a known thing that Malaysians have high standards when it comes to our local cuisine and we’re not afraid to be blunt about the taste. So when this Malaysian found some Malaysian food in New York, she knew she had to taste and review it.

Local influencer Ivor Xian recently shared a video where she checked out ‘Kopitiam’, a restaurant located in New York’s Chinatown that specialises in Malaysian cuisine. In her TikTok video, she shared her first impression of the restaurant and her honest opinion of her meal, which included teh tarik, nasi lemak and Penang white curry noodles.

Upon entering the restaurant, Ivor pointed out that the restaurant was packed with customers and looked promising from the authentic way the staff prepared the teh tarik. However, once she got her drink, which cost USD6 (or RM27), the influencer said it was a little milkier than the ones she’d normally get here in Malaysia.

She also reviewed the nasi lemak that was highly raved about by customers but was not up to Ivor’s expectations. In the video, the influencer said that the USD8 (or RM36) nasi lemak was a little dry and had no coconut fragrance. The video continued with her review of a bowl of Penang white curry noodles which cost USD18 or RM84. According to the influencer, the ratio of the noodles to the soup was off and the flavour of the soup was a little mild for her taste.

After the video was uploaded, many netizens shared their opinion of the review, including those who had previously visited the same restaurant. Some commented that the place was overrated while others claimed they enjoyed their meal when they ate there. A few even recommended other Malaysian restaurants in New York that had better food at a cheaper price.

Ivor had also previously tried Malaysian food in Australia and gave a better review so, maybe not all foreign restaurants are bad at making Malaysian food. Anyways, we’re glad that we can still enjoy delicious local food here at prices that won’t make our wallets cry.
