Malaysia has a lot of iconic landmarks and beautiful geological treasures. However, just like everything else, even without human intervention, these natural wonders of the world would eventually cease to exist one day due to erosion or drastic climate change.

Yesterday evening (Tuesday, 13th February), user @/jules12anne posted on Twitter to deliver some devastating news about the Bako Cobra Head Sea Stack, located in Bako National Park, Sarawak. As seen in the screenshots below, the country’s geological treasure has collapsed and disappeared from sight. “It’s really gone, guys. We don’t know when it has fallen but the icon of Bako is gone,” the user said in the video.

The news started gaining traction on social media where many locals expressed their grief over the loss of such an iconic sea arch. Netizens took to Twitter to reminisce about the times they visited the sea stack and shared photos of the attraction that had stood there for millions of years. Some were actually looking forward to seeing the sea stack in all its glory one day but alas, their dreams have been washed away by the waves as well.

The news was confirmed by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) earlier today in an official statement on Facebook. “The collapse of this iconic sea stack was most probably caused by big waves experienced on site. The recent big waves were the final act of erosion which had been happening to this coast of Sarawak for millions of years,” they wrote. From the statement alone, we can conclude that the landmark was always doomed to succumb to erosion.

In addition to its natural beauty, SFC CEO Tuan Abang Arabi bin Abg Aimran highlighted the sea stack’s significance for the region’s tourism industry, especially for boat operators near Bako National Park. Although there are still plenty of beautiful locations to visit in Sarawak, it’s truly tragic that the glorious Bako Sea Stack is no longer an option for locals and tourists to marvel at.
