Although Malaysians often express concerns over the abundance of shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur, there is still a sense of pride and joy whenever a foreigner praises these establishments, often comparing them favourably to those in their home country. That said, it is not every day that locals agree with criticisms from tourists about one of our malls.
Yesterday (Thursday, 13th November), a British content creator posted a video on his TikTok channel warning others not to visit a particular shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur, claiming it is full of conmen. Here’s what he said:

The content creator, who goes by Expat Diaries on social media, is a British man currently residing in Malaysia. He frequently shares videos about his experiences in the country, some positive, some less so, but that is all part of the journey when moving to a new place. One of his less favourable experiences occurred during a visit to Plaza Low Yat in Kuala Lumpur.
According to the content creator, he believes the shopping centre is full of scammers and conmen. “[This place] is driving me mad. It’s full of conmen. Every time you go into one of these stores to buy a phone or a laptop, they’ll charge you up to 4% above the original price if you pay by card,” he explained. The vlogger added that the iPhone 17 models sold there cost at least RM200 more than the price on the official Apple store.

He concluded that people, especially foreigners, should stay away from Plaza Low Yat, though he clarified that it is fine if they are only there to buy simple items such as wires, cables, and accessories. The TikToker’s video has since gone viral with netizens, including Malaysians, agreeing with his statement. Many shared their experiences of visiting the shopping centre, while others pointed out that it had not always been that way, noting that it was better back in the 90s.
Have you been to Plaza Low Yat recently? Do you agree that it’s full of con men nowadays?
