Taiwanese singer Ella Chen (陳嘉樺) is no stranger to Malaysia, having married a Malaysian man. While she’s always shared her love for the local food, she rarely shows off her Malay language skills – until now!
The star recently shared a behind-the-scenes video of her photoshoot with Malaysian women’s magazine Citta Bella. During the photoshoot, Ella started speaking some Malay, saying, “Aku Cintamu (I Love You)”. Of course, the crew was impressed to hear the Taiwanese singer suddenly speaking in our local language. Upon receiving a warm response from the team, Ella started saying more Malay words she knew.

However, unlike the first phrase she shared, the other Malay words in Ella’s vocabulary were related to food. The S.H.E member began listing several local delicacies, including laksa, nasi lemak, rojak, roti canai and mee goreng. While not exactly a food, Ella also listed “mamak” as one of the Malay words she knows. She did have a hard time remembering the word for the traditional Malaysian kueh, “onde-onde”, but got it in the end with some help from some local staff.
The star and the crew burst into laughter after learning that the only Malay words Ella knows are food-related. However, it’s no surprise to the public, since the public figure is a foodie who is very fond of Malaysian cuisine. Towards the end of the video, Ella also shared her love for prawn noodles and laksa, saying she must have these dishes whenever she’s in Malaysia.

Fans have since reacted to the video, mostly laughing in amusement over the star’s “Malay language skills.” Some even quipped that Ella must’ve been hungry at the time of the shoot. Many also joked that the words she knows show her status as a true “Malaysian daughter-in-law”. A few fans also said that the star should visit Malaysia more often if she enjoys the local dishes.
Ella does visit Malaysia regularly for work and holidays, especially during the Chinese New Year period. Maybe the next time she visits, she’ll pick up more Malay words.
