It’s only been a few days since Apple’s much-hyped iPhone 17 series hit stores, but one concertgoer in Hong Kong has already taken “stress testing” to a whole new level. Over the weekend, Taiwanese Mandopop star Eric Chou (周興哲) was in the middle of an interaction segment at his packed Hong Kong show when an orange iPhone 17 Pro Max came flying onto the stage.
The 30-year-old was visibly stunned for a moment before breaking into laughter, quipping, “This fan must be very rich!” Considering that the iPhone 17 Pro Max comes with a hefty price tag starting at around RM 5,499, it’s not exactly the kind of gadget one would normally toss around.

Instead of brushing the incident off, a giggly Eric picked up the phone, snapped a cheeky selfie with it, and then passed it to a staff member so it could be returned to its daring owner. The lighthearted moment quickly went viral online, with clips circulating across social media platforms.
The timing of the stunt couldn’t have been more perfect. In China, where the iPhone 17 frenzy is at its peak, netizens have been stress-testing Apple’s newest release in their own unusual ways. Videos have shown users dropping their shiny new devices on pavements to prove just how easily they scratch and crack.

Netizens were equally entertained, with some joking that this was the perfect free advertisement for phone case companies. Others said that the stunt did a better job than Apple’s own marketing team.
Whether or not the Hong Kong fan was part of the “durability test movement,” the incident has added a funny twist to the iPhone 17’s launch story. Watch the full video here:
