Hong Kong star Law Kar Ying (罗家英) has had an illustrious career in show business since the 70’s. However, behind his success, the actor has been battling cancer for many years. After revealing his fourth cancer diagnosis, the 78-year-old shares the toll it has taken on his finances.
The renowned opera singer recently appeared on a talk show where he talked about life after his fourth cancer diagnosis. Law Kar Ying revealed his diagnosis during an interview in May 2025. The actor was first diagnosed with stage three liver cancer in 2004, and later had part of his liver removed to save his life. Ten years later, doctors discovered a 2cm tumour in his liver during a routine medical checkup. Later in 2019, Law Kar Ying was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
However, Law Kar Ying revealed on the talk show that his savings have depleted after years of battling cancer. During the interview, the “A Chinese Odyssey” actor admitted to never having insurance because he doesn’t believe in them. Therefore, all his medical expenses, including his surgeries to remove his tumours, were paid for with his savings.
The show host also asked if his wife, renowned Hong Kong star Liza Wang (汪明荃), has provided him with any financial support throughout his many cancer battles. In response, the actor said, “I have never asked my wife for help. I don’t need her help. Don’t ever tell her about it. She hasn’t asked to help either because she knows I have savings.” However, Law Kar Ying quipped that he would be happy if his wife were willing to help with his medical expenses.
During the interview, the star also candidly spoke about his plans to forgo chemotherapy and radiotherapy for his recent cancer diagnosis. He previously mentioned he won’t undergo the treatments because of his old age. He said, “The cancer is no longer controllable. What can I do? Eight years from now, I’ll be in my eighties. After chemotherapy, I’ll be half-human, half-ghost. What’s the point of living like that?”
